Description
This wine is produced in the 8000 year old ‘Qvevri method’. A Qvevri is a uniquely Georgian creation, a large subterranean clay jar, in which wines are fermented and matured on the grape skins. This gives Qvevri amber wines tannins approaching those of red wines, as well as a complexity of flavour and structure not found in other white wines.
The Georgian Valleys Qvevris Rkatsiteli is made from 100% Rkatsiteli grapes; which are widely regarded to benefit most from the Qvevri method of production. This traditional wine is not pressed off the skins until 6 months after primary fermentation. It is this extended skin contact which gives it an appealing amber/ orange colour.
Deep and rich aromas of pine, pear and quince jump out of the glass. Its appearance is beautifully golden/ amber in colour. Flavours include quince, apple and stewed fruit.
Recommended food pairings: grilled/ barbecued meat and vegetables. Thanks to its unique tannin structure, it pairs well with both white and red meats. It also holds up well to spicy dishes. Interestingly – due to its versatility – it is possible to have a Qvevri amber wine throughout a whole meal (i.e. with your starter, fish course, main meal and/ or cheese board!)
“This entry-level Qvevri wine is an excellent introduction to the style, made with the traditional 6 months of skin contact, but less stems. Ripe apricot and pear fruit are supported by firm, but unobtrusive phenolics. There’s a typical hint of jasmine green tea on the nose. Drink 2019-2026”
