Description
The Kankatela winery derives its name from the endearing term its ancestors gave to the “crunchy” characteristic of their local red wine grape variety (i.e. the thin, but firm skin of Aleksandrouli). Kankatela’s vineyards are located in the Sadmeli village (near Ambrolauri) in the Racha-Lechkhumi region of Eastern Georgia. Racha-Lechkhumi is best known for producing wines from Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli.
Kankatela’s quality-driven approach to winemaking begins in the vineyard and is fulfilled at the winery. Its vineyards are located a mere 10 to 15 minutes from the winery – this helps to preserve the freshness of the grapes during transportation. And, results in the quality of fruit necessary for producing distinctive wines.
Made in Khvanchkara (the microzone with Protected Designation of Origin) famous for producing Georgia’s most highly prized semi-sweet red. Kankatela’s Aleksandrouli is bottled dry, however. It is a beautiful ruby colour and boasts wonderful red fruit aromas. This is a balanced, medium-bodied, fruit-forward red, with a chewy character. Its supple tannins suggest considerable potential to improve in the bottle. We recommend allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes to enjoy at its best.
